The Venus Voice | February 2011 Issue

The February 2011 issue of The Venus Voice is now online. This week, hundreds of copies of this paper will be distributed and put on news stands, and it is sure to create a firestorm. Due to unexpected delays in January, the February issue is the January issue --- there have been so many variations and delays and conditions beyond my control, but I believe it was for the best, because now we have another issue (this is the fourth issue ever) packed full of dynamite instead of scraps of little fireworks.

FYI: Venus water customers received a water bill and a city press release that alleges false allegations made by The Ellis County Observer and two contributors to The Venus Voice. However, the full truth was not made known in that press release, and readers can decide for themselves what their own mayor said and wrote that contradicts everything in the city-issued press release:

Beer & Wine in Venus?

The Venus Voice publisher Joey G. Dauben is planning to launch a beer and wine petition in the city limits of Venus in 2011. A total of 35 percent of the gubernatorial (governor's race) voters within the city limits is needed to sign petitions. The Venus Voice is working on obtaining that number as we speak from the Johnson County Elections Department. There are a couple of steps that need to be conducted before voters can see a local-option referendum in town:

  • A legal notice must be published in either the Alvarado Post or the Midlothian Mirror, or any newspaper with general circulation (at least one year) in the town. The Venus Voice will qualify as a general circulation paper in October 2011, but the earliest a beer and wine election can be conducted is May 2012.
  • The 35 percent figure of voters is needed to sign the petitions (example: 100 petition signatures.)
  • The Johnson County Commissioners Court calls the election

Opposition to beer and wine will come from the churches, but probably the stores in Midlothian as well, but the way to grow a municipal corporation we call a city is to grow it economically. Therefore, more sales tax dollars being spent in town will go to the town instead of Venus residents driving to Midlothian to buy beer and thus, giving Midlothian the sales taxes.

For those interested in getting Venus "wet," contact us at: www.facebook.com/jdauben or publisher@thevenusvoice.com.

The City of Palmer is now "wet" because of this same strategy. We got the signatures, we got the votes (52 percent to 47 percent on Nov. 2) and now we have the experience to make other towns wet.

Venus Middle School Field Trip to Dallas' Strokers Motorcylce Shop Outrages Parents

Venus Middle School teacher Susan Dingler took students on a field trip to Dallas' Strokers Motorcycle Shop recently, and it has outraged several parents in the Venus ISD. Strokers is also the reality TV show home of Ma's Roadhouse. Appropriate for adults, maybe, but middle school students? The Venus Voice will let parents decide: http://www.elliscountyobserver.com/?p=18260

One also has to ask where VMS Principal Randall Buck is on this situation as well. He also serves the public as a city councilman. A video about Buck on YouTube can be found here: http://www.elliscountyobserver.com/?p=18075
